WHO IS PRG?
PRG is a responsive housing organization that serves the seven-county Twin Cities metro area. We combine bricks and mortar development with housing education and one-on-one counseling to build neighborhood stability and family self-sufficiency.
* We transform vacant, foreclosed properties into beautiful homes;
* We develop unique, affordable housing for special-needs populations;
* We provide pre-purchase education and counseling for first-time homebuyers; and
* We provide foreclosure-prevention counseling for homeowners.
WHAT DOES PRG STAND FOR?
The initials "PRG" connect us to our roots in the 1970s as Powderhorn Residents Group, a group of neighbors concerned about affordable, resident-controlled housing in the Powderhorn Park neighborhood of Minneapolis. Very early in our history, PRG began applying our expertise to housing problems beyond the borders of our founding neighborhood, and today we serve many core neighborhoods of Minneapolis, and also nearby communities. We keep the name PRG just as we retain our commitment to genuine connection with the families and communities we serve.
WHAT'S A RESPONSIVE HOUSING ORGANIZATION
We work at the invitation of neighborhoods and cultural groups. As a relatively small organization, we are nimble enough to tailor our services and take on unique and challenging projects. This often means creating one-of-a kind housing for specific groups of people. And we're currently applying this expertise to respond to the foreclosure crisis in a uniquely effective way.
What new functionality we are looking for
Our vision for our website:
*** Clients can easily, seamlessly, register and pay for homebuyer workhsops, and feel certain they are dealing with a professional organization that is handling their information well.
*** Clients can easily find all of the information they need to get foreclosure counseling, and all of the forms they need to access during that process.
*** Potential homebuyers can easily see (and be impressed by) information on homes for sale, and get in touch with people at PRG to talk about those homes.
*** Updating the website is so easy, staff spend hardly any time making needed updates (for example, changing workshop dates and adding new information on homes for sale).
*** Visitors to the website know instantly about PRG's commitment to excellent, affordable housing and our long record of partnership with low-income communities, and how they can support our work.
*** People can do all of the above on mobile devices, too.
How the new functionality will help
Please do not be fooled by the "not very ugly" appearance of our current website. It was built in 2004 and has been maintained / "improved" ever since by smart people who don't know anything about websites except what we have been able to figure out using google and a book called "HTML for the World Wide Web." In other words, scratch beneath the surface and it is held together with duct tape and idealism.
Scarier yet, try to register and pay for a homebuyer workshop, and see how fast you get lost, confused, stuck, or just plain frustrated.
We're doing our best to make our website an easy place for people to get the services they need, but we are the wrong kind of nerds. We spend way too much time wrangling clunky tools to try to make things work how they should.
A new website would mean less staff time spent on these kinds of confusion and difficulty; an easier, more professional experience for people who want to use our services; and greater visibility for the professionalism, creativity, and high-quality work that make PRG a great partner for underserved communities.
