The Nerdery - Overnight Website Challenge

Minneapolis 2013,

PRG, Inc.

WHO IS PRG?

PRG is a responsive housing organization that serves the seven-county Twin Cities metro area. We combine bricks and mortar development with housing education and one-on-one counseling to build neighborhood stability and family self-sufficiency.

* We transform vacant, foreclosed properties into beautiful homes;

* We develop unique, affordable housing for special-needs populations;

* We provide pre-purchase education and counseling for first-time homebuyers; and

* We provide foreclosure-prevention counseling for homeowners.

WHAT DOES PRG STAND FOR?

The initials "PRG" connect us to our roots in the 1970s as Powderhorn Residents Group, a group of neighbors concerned about affordable, resident-controlled housing in the Powderhorn Park neighborhood of Minneapolis. Very early in our history, PRG began applying our expertise to housing problems beyond the borders of our founding neighborhood, and today we serve many core neighborhoods of Minneapolis, and also nearby communities. We keep the name PRG just as we retain our commitment to genuine connection with the families and communities we serve.

WHAT'S A RESPONSIVE HOUSING ORGANIZATION

We work at the invitation of neighborhoods and cultural groups. As a relatively small organization, we are nimble enough to tailor our services and take on unique and challenging projects. This often means creating one-of-a kind housing for specific groups of people. And we're currently applying this expertise to respond to the foreclosure crisis in a uniquely effective way.

What new functionality we are looking for

Our vision for our website:

*** Clients can easily, seamlessly, register and pay for homebuyer workhsops, and feel certain they are dealing with a professional organization that is handling their information well.

*** Clients can easily find all of the information they need to get foreclosure counseling, and all of the forms they need to access during that process.

*** Potential homebuyers can easily see (and be impressed by) information on homes for sale, and get in touch with people at PRG to talk about those homes.

*** Updating the website is so easy, staff spend hardly any time making needed updates (for example, changing workshop dates and adding new information on homes for sale).

*** Visitors to the website know instantly about PRG's commitment to excellent, affordable housing and our long record of partnership with low-income communities, and how they can support our work.

*** People can do all of the above on mobile devices, too.

How the new functionality will help

Please do not be fooled by the "not very ugly" appearance of our current website. It was built in 2004 and has been maintained / "improved" ever since by smart people who don't know anything about websites except what we have been able to figure out using google and a book called "HTML for the World Wide Web." In other words, scratch beneath the surface and it is held together with duct tape and idealism.

Scarier yet, try to register and pay for a homebuyer workshop, and see how fast you get lost, confused, stuck, or just plain frustrated.

We're doing our best to make our website an easy place for people to get the services they need, but we are the wrong kind of nerds. We spend way too much time wrangling clunky tools to try to make things work how they should.

A new website would mean less staff time spent on these kinds of confusion and difficulty; an easier, more professional experience for people who want to use our services; and greater visibility for the professionalism, creativity, and high-quality work that make PRG a great partner for underserved communities.

PRG has made a big impact in my neighborhood. The organization's work is very important, but they are not as well known as they should be. An upgraded website would certainly help!

PRG truly is a mission driven organization that's helps people in the community find and keep affordable housing. It is one of the best organizations I have ever been a part of and I am very proud to have been able to be part of a group that has such a positive impact on the community.

I'm biased (I work here) but PRG is great. This organization has been around since 1976 and is one of the most creative, interesting housing organizations around. Because we are committed to following community leadership and making homes that really fit community needs--even when it's challenging to make an "outside the box" building really happen--we've built some amazing parts of our city.

The website ... on the other hand ... well, it could be better. I'd love to see it be a better reflection of the professionalism and smarts of our staff and our commitment to being welcoming and useful for people who come to us seeking housing assistance.

PRG does amazing work! They are cutting edge regarding the way they look at and actually provide new and renovated housing for lower to moderate income families and individuals in distressed neighborhoods. My sister bought a home that they renovated 5 years ago and still loves her home. They preserved the period detailing while providing contemporary amenities like a better functioning kitchen and energy upgrades that make the house not only affordable to acquire but also to live in and maintain. The house still has that special quality that my sister cherishes and indeed continues to improve upon. Prg's new construction does not look affordable and yet it is which results in a product that does not end up dumbing down the neighborhood. Their house designs would be welcome in any neighborhood in Minneapolis. They are deserving of the support they have been given and i will continue to suppoet the organization any way I am able

I am a Realtor and a member of the Housing Committee in the Jordan Neighborhood of Minneapolis where PRG has been an incredible partner in some of Jordan's housing cluster developments.

PRG Inc helped my neighborhoof to build a wonderful home for women and children fleeing domestic violence. I call the facility "a home," for it has helped hundreds make a new beginning over the last few years. PRG does great work, and are a great partner for many of us to work with1

PRG has been an incredible partner in helping my church use its property for development of affordable housing for LGBT seniors. This is a significant need in our community and the project is underway and should be complete by this coming September. It would not have happened if PRG hadn't kept us focused and energized around our housing goal. They deserve all the help and support they can get for the important work they are doing in our metropolitan area.

PRG is a nimble yet highly professional organization that often exercises great flexibility in meeting client and community needs. The important work has tremendous impact on community stability. Five years after my PRG homebuyer workshop, I continue to recall what I learned from PRG; and I believe my experience has led me to be a successful homeowner. The website should be reflective of the high-quality, expert, and nimble qualities of the organization. Your assistance would be appreciated!

Prginc. makes residential housing possible for the low income sector to buy homes below market properties.
They turn delapitated, vacant, distressed houses in blighted neighborhoods into updated and rehabbed good as new houses. They provide financial credit enhancement advisors and various supportive services in the pre-purchase process. Promoting affordable housing to all and building community to provide safe, secure, stable neighborhoods.

What can I say, PRG INC, has impacted my life in so man8y ways that its hard to find a place to start. I have sat on the Board which was a great learning experience, which allowed me to move on to sit on County boards due to that experience.
After observing the previous Exec. Dir. passion for the people residing in the properties that they owned, it helped me to appreciate the Ownership with more respect than before. It empowered me to transfer those type of skills learned to my employment as Property Manager.
Finally, PRG, cares about the people and want the people to be empowered, educated and capable of home ownership.

PRG is a wonderful asset in the community that helps people dealing with both problems and possibilities find and stay in affordable housing. Their website doesn't communicate their services well enough - it's more like a brochure listing information. More than that, PRG's website doesn't convey the caring, personal approach that the staff have with clients and community members. Too much text and not enough human element. A new website could help them break through and communicate their values and mission better.

Rival legal teams, well-financed and highly motivated, are girding for court battles over the coming months on laws enacted in Arkansas and North Dakota that would impose the nation's toughest bans on abortion.
For all their differences, attorneys for the two states and the abortion-rights supporters opposing them agree on this: The laws represent an unprecedented frontal assault on the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that established a nationwide right to abortion.
The Arkansas law, approved March 6 when legislators overrode a veto by Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe, would ban most abortions from the 12th week of pregnancy onward. On March 26, North Dakota went further, with Republican Gov. Jack Dalrymple signing a measure that would ban abortions as early as six weeks into a pregnancy, when a fetal heartbeat can first be detected and before some women even know they're pregnant.
Abortion-rights advocates plan to challenge both measures, contending they are unconstitutional violations of the Roe ruling that legalized abortion until a fetus could viably survive outside the womb. A fetus is generally considered viable at 22 to 24 weeks.
